VPN for OSRS: Latency, Bans, and What Actually Helps
Old School RuneScape is unusually sensitive to a VPN, because the game is unusually sensitive to latency and unusually attentive to where a login comes from. Both of those cut against the default assumption that a VPN is a harmless addition. Sometimes it is the fix; more often it is the cause.
A VPN almost always adds latency, because it adds distance. In a game where timing matters, that is a real cost rather than a rounding error.
It can also help, in one specific case: when your own provider is routing you badly or throttling the traffic.
Logging in from a new country is a pattern account-security systems watch for. That is a account-safety consideration, not a technical one.
Before you pay for a tunnel, measure the route you already have.
The short answer
If your connection to the game servers is already direct and stable, a VPN will make it slightly worse. That is not a flaw in the VPN; it is geometry. Your traffic now travels to a third location before continuing to its destination.
If your connection is not direct, because your provider routes you through a distant exchange or shapes the traffic, a VPN can shorten the effective path and improve things measurably.
You cannot tell which situation you are in by reading forum posts, because both are common and each group is reporting accurately. You can tell by measuring, and that takes about ten minutes.
Why latency matters more here than in most games
Old School RuneScape runs on a tick, and a great deal of what skilled play consists of is placing actions inside the right tick. That makes the game unusually intolerant of jitter, which is variation in delay rather than delay itself.
A consistently higher ping is workable; you adapt to it. Inconsistent delay is not, because the timing you learned stops predicting the outcome. This distinction matters when choosing a server, since the nearest one is not automatically the steadiest.
It also means a raw ping figure is an incomplete measurement. Ping tells you the average. What you want to know is the spread.
Measuring before you buy
Run a traceroute to the game world you normally play on, from your ordinary connection, at the time of day you normally play. Note where the delay accumulates and note whether the hops are geographically sensible.
If the delay appears in the first two or three hops, the problem is close to home and a VPN will not help; that is your line, your router, or your local network. If your traffic visibly detours through another country before coming back, that is a routing problem, and a tunnel that starts closer to the destination can genuinely fix it.

Choosing a server if you do use one
The rule is not nearest to you. It is nearest to the game servers, on a stable route.
That often means a server in the same country as the game infrastructure rather than the one your VPN app marks as fastest, because most apps rank by distance from you rather than by quality of the onward path. Pick manually and test two or three.
Then stay on the one you chose. Server switching mid-session is one of the more reliable ways to produce a disconnect at the worst possible moment, and in this game a disconnect has a cost that a dropped video stream does not.
The account-safety question

What a VPN will not fix
It will not repair an unstable Wi-Fi link, and a surprising share of what gets blamed on routing is a congested channel or a distant access point. A cable removes that variable entirely and costs nothing to test. It will not overcome a slow or overloaded device, and it will not compensate for a connection that is saturated by something else in the household.
It will not make a bad route good if the badness is in the last mile. The tunnel starts at your device, so everything between your device and your provider is unchanged.

The requirements for this use are narrow: a wide choice of server locations so you can pick the route rather than accept one, a stable client that does not renegotiate connections unprompted, and a policy you have actually read.
