Fastest VPN: Why Every Speed Test Gives a Different Winner
Search for the fastest VPN and you will find a dozen results naming a dozen different winners, each with a chart. They are not lying to you. They are measuring different things, on different lines, at different times, and reporting the result as though it were a property of the provider rather than of the test.
This article does not add a thirteenth chart. It explains what determines the speed you will actually get, which turns out to be mostly things the provider does not control, and then says which providers are doing the parts they do control well.
Your own connection is the ceiling. No VPN makes a line faster than the line.
Protocol choice accounts for most of the difference between a fast VPN and a slow one, and the modern protocols have largely closed the gap.
Distance to the server dominates everything else. A nearby server on a mediocre provider beats a distant server on a fast one.
Above roughly 100 Mbps the differences stop being noticeable in use. 4K streaming needs a fraction of that.

Why the published tests disagree
Four variables differ between every published test, and each of them can change the ranking on its own.
The tester's own line. A review run on a symmetric gigabit fibre connection produces different relative results from one run on a 200 Mbps cable line, because a VPN's overhead is a percentage of throughput plus a fixed processing cost. On a slow line the overhead is invisible. On a very fast one it is the whole story.
Which server pair was used. Testing a US provider from Amsterdam to New York and testing it from New York to New York are different measurements. Most published tests average across locations, and the choice of locations decides the average.
Time of day and server load. VPN servers are shared. The same server measured at 03:00 and at 21:00 gives different numbers, and providers do not publish load.
Protocol. A test run on OpenVPN and a test run on WireGuard on the same provider can differ by a factor of several. Unless the test states the protocol, the number means little.
None of this makes the tests worthless. It makes them useful for one thing, which is spotting a provider that is consistently slow across many tests, and useless for another, which is predicting your own speed.
What actually determines the speed you get
Your line, first. A VPN cannot exceed your connection. If you have 100 Mbps, the question is only how much of it survives.
The protocol, second. WireGuard and the implementations built on it changed this market. It is a much smaller codebase than OpenVPN, runs in kernel space on most platforms, and reconnects fast on mobile networks that drop. Providers have built their own versions: NordLynx at Nord, Lightway at ExpressVPN, and Proton and Mullvad run WireGuard directly. If a provider offers only OpenVPN in 2026, that is the finding.
Distance, third, and it dominates. Latency is a function of physical distance and cannot be engineered away. Connecting from Europe to a server in Singapore adds round-trip time that no protocol removes. For anything interactive, a nearby server on any competent provider beats a distant server on the fastest one.
Server load, fourth. Providers with more capacity in the places you connect from will be more consistent at peak times. This is where a large server count earns its keep, and it is the one number on a marketing page that maps onto something real.
How much speed you actually need
This is the part the speed-test arms race leaves out.
Streaming in 4K needs somewhere around 25 Mbps. High definition needs less. A video call needs a few Mbps and cares far more about latency and jitter than about throughput. Large downloads benefit from more, but they run in the background.
That means the difference between a VPN that delivers 300 Mbps and one that delivers 500 Mbps is invisible in every ordinary use. The difference between 8 Mbps and 80 Mbps is not. The useful question is not which provider is fastest, it is whether a provider is fast enough on the route you will actually use, and almost all of the audited providers are.
1. NordVPN: the most consistent across distances
Nord's protocol, NordLynx, is WireGuard with a modified handshake that addresses the address-storage question in the original design. In practice it performs at the top of the market and, more usefully, holds up on long routes where other providers fall away.
That consistency comes from capacity. Nord runs one of the largest server networks in the industry, which means less contention at peak times in the places most people connect from. It is based in Panama, audited repeatedly, and runs diskless infrastructure.

2. ExpressVPN: built for reconnection rather than peak numbers
Lightway was designed around a different goal from raw throughput. It is a small codebase, it is open source, it has been independently audited, and it reconnects almost instantly when a mobile connection drops.
For a phone moving between wifi and cellular, that behaviour matters more than a peak figure measured on a desktop. 3. Proton VPN: fast, verifiable, and honest about the free tier
Proton runs WireGuard directly and offers an accelerated routing option on its paid plans. Its applications are open source on every platform and its audits are published in full, which is not a speed property but is the reason to prefer it when speeds are comparable.

4. Surfshark: the fast option for a household
Surfshark runs WireGuard and performs in the same band as the providers above. What distinguishes it is unlimited simultaneous connections, which means the speed applies to every device in the house on one subscription rather than to three of them.

5. Mullvad: fast, plain, and priced the same every month
Mullvad runs WireGuard, holds no account tied to your identity, publishes its applications as open source, and charges a flat monthly rate with no first-term discount and no renewal jump.

A note on the name
Searching for the fastest VPN surfaces a provider called FastestVPN. The name is a brand, not a measurement, and it should not be read as a finding. It is a real service with a real product, and it competes in the budget and lifetime-deal end of the market rather than at the top of the performance tables. We would apply the same caution to lifetime subscriptions there as anywhere: a single payment cannot fund a recurring infrastructure cost indefinitely.
How to test it yourself, properly
Any provider worth using has a refund window. Use it as a test rather than as insurance.
Measure your line without the VPN first, at the time of day you actually use it. Then connect to the nearest server, measure again, and compare. Then connect to the server you will genuinely need, which may be in another country, and measure that. The second number is the one that matters.
Test the protocol the application defaults to, then switch to WireGuard or its house equivalent if it was not already selected, and repeat. On several providers this single setting is the difference between disappointing and fine.
Do this on the device and network you will actually use. A result from a desktop on ethernet tells you nothing useful about a phone on hotel wifi.

There is no stable answer, which is why the published tests disagree. On current evidence the providers running WireGuard or a derivative, which includes NordVPN, Proton VPN, Surfshark, Mullvad and ExpressVPN, all perform in the same band, and the difference between them is smaller than the difference between a near server and a distant one. Choose on server presence where you connect from, then on the properties that do not change with the weather.
Is FastestVPN legitimate?
It is a real service rather than a scam, but the name is branding and not a test result. It sits in the budget segment and promotes lifetime subscriptions, which we would avoid on the grounds that a one-off payment cannot fund ongoing infrastructure. It does not appear at the top of independent performance comparisons.
Which VPN server is fastest?
The nearest one with spare capacity, essentially always. Latency tracks physical distance and no protocol removes it. If you need a specific country, choose the city nearest to you within it rather than the capital by default.
Does a VPN always slow down my connection?
Yes, though the amount varies from imperceptible to severe. Encryption costs processing time and routing through an extra hop costs latency. On modern protocols and a nearby server the loss is often under ten percent, which is invisible in use. The rare cases where a VPN appears to speed things up are situations where an internet provider was throttling a specific type of traffic.
Is WireGuard actually faster than OpenVPN?
In practice, consistently yes. It is a much smaller codebase, runs in kernel space on most platforms, and handles reconnection better.
