Search Netflix in the United States for "vampire diaries" and you will get a result. It is Legacies, the third series in the same universe, and that one is on Netflix. The parent series is not.
The three shows sit in three different places in the US, which is unusual even by the standards of this subject:

So a US viewer who searches, finds something, and assumes the original is there has been misled by the catalogue rather than by a bad article. Check the title on the page, not the search result.

The CW's output deal kept each series exclusive to Netflix until five years after its final season was added to the service.
