Is The Last of Us on Netflix?
No. On 27 September 2026 it was not on Netflix in any of the eleven countries checked: the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, Australia, India, Japan and Brazil. It is an HBO series, so the usual route is HBO Max.
If you have read that Netflix bought Warner Bros., that story is out of date. Netflix announced an agreement on 5 December 2025 to buy the studio and streaming business, but it never took effect. On 26 February 2026 the Warner Bros. Discovery board declared a rival bid superior, and Netflix did not raise. Netflix does not own HBO Max.

Where The Last of Us actually streams
Canada is the clearest exception: the route there is Crave, not HBO Max. Japan runs through U-NEXT, which carries HBO Max as a channel inside its own service. India runs through JioHotstar. HBO Max is usually also sold as an Amazon Channel, the same catalogue billed through Amazon. The US adds Spectrum On Demand and Australia Foxtel Now.

The takeover story, and why it changes nothing
Two mistakes circulate. The first is that Netflix owns HBO now. It does not. The second is the mirror image: that Paramount Skydance already owns Warner Bros. Discovery and that HBO Max has been folded into Paramount+. Neither had happened on 27 September 2026.
Keep announcement and effect apart. Paramount Skydance announced the acquisition on 27 February 2026. Shareholders approved on 23 April 2026, and clearance followed from the US Department of Justice on 12 June, the European Commission on 22 July and the UK on 6 August 2026. After a settlement with California and the Writers Guild on 21 September 2026, Ellison said closing was roughly two weeks away. As at 27 September 2026 it had not closed. That sentence may age quickly, which is why it carries a date.
Ellison confirmed on 2 March 2026 that Paramount+ and HBO Max are to be merged, with no date given. Either way, the series stays with a Netflix rival.
Why HBO will not hand this to Netflix
Sony Pictures Television produces and distributes the show, which Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann created. Sony does not move it to a service of its own, because Sony runs no general subscription service. The streaming rights sit with HBO, and HBO Max belongs to Warner Bros. Discovery, a direct Netflix rival. A flagship title does not get licensed to the competition.
Two seasons, with a third filming
Season 1 ran to 9 episodes, from 15 January to 12 March 2023. Season 2 ran to 7 episodes, from 13 April to 25 May 2025. Filming on season 3 began on 2 March 2026 in British Columbia and is scheduled to end on 27 November 2026, with a premiere expected in 2027. The episode count is not fixed, only that it will be longer than season 2. Neil Druckmann and HBO's Casey Bloys have both indicated season 3 will be the last, but HBO has not announced it formally.
The games have no bearing on streaming rights. A feature film adaptation stalled and an animated short was cancelled, so no film, prequel or remake is streaming elsewhere.
Buying instead of subscribing
Purchase options were found in ten of the eleven markets, at stores such as Amazon Video, the Apple TV Store and Fandango at Home. No prices appear here, because they differ by country and retailer and go stale fast. Do the sum yourself. Buying a complete series usually costs several times one month of a subscription, while buying a single season often does not, so check the price of the season you actually want before you decide.
What has not been checked
Eleven countries were checked. Netflix operates in more than 190 markets, so this page cannot claim the series is off Netflix worldwide. Spain, Mexico, South Korea, South Africa, Turkey and the Middle East were not checked. The rights sit with HBO itself, which is a reason to expect the same pattern elsewhere, but that is not evidence.
One smaller gap. Whether HBO Max will replace Crave in Canada is not established either.
