Is The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl on Netflix?
Type "Sharkboy" into Netflix and something appears. That is the problem. It is usually We Can Be Heroes, the 2020 sequel Netflix made itself. Lavagirl is in it. Sharkboy is on screen. It is not the 2005 film, and most articles answering this question have answered the wrong one.
The 2005 film is licensed market by market, so there is no global answer. On 27 September 2026, seventeen markets were checked one at a time. On Netflix in seven: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Mexico, Argentina. Not on Netflix in ten: the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy, India. In Germany it also runs in the ad-supported tier.
On Netflix in 7 of the 17 markets checked on 27 September 2026, absent from the other 10.

The mix-up that makes most answers wrong
The two films share characters, a director and a search box. That is enough to produce a wrong answer. We Can Be Heroes was released on 25 December 2020 and Netflix owns it, so it never leaves and never moves. Taylor Dooley returned as Lavagirl and Taylor Lautner did not return as Sharkboy. None of that says anything about the 2005 film, and a reader who wants the original finds the sequel instead.
The second error is treating one country as the world. "It is on Netflix" and "it left Netflix" are both wrong as general claims, because both are true somewhere.
What to watch instead where Netflix does not have it
In the United States there is no subscription home at all. The routes are Hoopla, free with a library card, and renting or buying from Amazon Video, the Apple TV Store and Fandango At Home. In the UK the subscription route is Sony Pictures Core, bought as an Amazon channel. Australian listings show the same channel, although Sony has only documented that channel in the United States, Canada, Japan and the United Kingdom, so treat the Australian route as the least certain on this page. In Canada it sits in Amazon Prime Video, ad-supported version included.
In the Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy, Ireland and India no subscription carries it. Renting or buying is the only route. The Apple TV Store serves all six. Amazon Video serves the other five but not India, where the Apple TV Store stands alone. Rakuten TV covers the European five, Sky Store covers Ireland and Canal VOD covers France.
The arithmetic is mild. This is a single film, not a box set, so a rental almost always beats taking on a subscription you would keep for one title. Check the figure in your own store.
Why the answer changes by country
The rights are split. Dimension Films released the film in the US and Canada on 10 June 2005, under Miramax, then owned by Disney. That library changed hands twice, and on 3 April 2020 ViacomCBS, now Paramount Skydance, took 49 per cent of it plus exclusive worldwide distribution rights.
Internationally, Columbia Pictures co-produced and Sony Pictures Releasing International distributed, which is why the UK and Australian route is Sony's own service. Paramount has Paramount+ and the film did not turn up there in any of the seventeen markets checked. Sony has no broad service competing with Netflix, only the narrow Core, so it licenses widely to whoever pays. Where a studio has no window to defend, the title travels. That is how a film absent from every US subscription turns up on Netflix in Germany.
German-speaking, Nordic and Latin American markets fall on the Netflix side and English-speaking and southern European ones do not. In a sample this small that is an observation, not a rule.
What this check does not cover
Seventeen markets were checked and roughly 175 were not. Norway, Denmark, Poland and Japan were not checked, so the Nordic read rests on Sweden and Finland alone.
None of the seven Netflix markets shows an expiry date, which is not proof there is none. Licensed titles run to a fixed term, so a market can flip without warning. No announced but not yet effective change was found for either film. The verification date is the shelf life of this answer.
The rights split above is inferred from the 2005 credits plus which services carry the film today. No contract was seen. Sony has documented the Sony Pictures Core channel in the United States, Canada, Japan and the United Kingdom only, yet Australian listings show it as a route, which is why the Australian route carries less weight than the British one. Every service named above was still trading on 27 September 2026.
