Is The Lord of the Rings on Netflix?
There is no single answer, and most pages that give one are wrong. On 27 September 2026 we checked 29 Netflix markets. The Peter Jackson trilogy is on Netflix in 16 of them and absent in nine. In three more, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, only The Fellowship of the Ring is there. In Indonesia we checked Fellowship alone and found it on Netflix.
In the United States it is not on Netflix. It streams on HBO Max, as in the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands, while in Germany, France, Italy and Japan it is on Netflix today. An American editor writes "not on Netflix", a German editor writes "on Netflix", and both are right at home and wrong as a general claim.
Netflix runs in more than 190 markets. We measured 29 and make no claim about the rest. Check your own account: that is the only check that covers it.
All three films are on Netflix in 16 checked countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Poland, Turkey, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.
No film is on Netflix in nine: the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal and South Africa.
Brazil, Mexico and Argentina carry only The Fellowship of the Ring. Indonesia carries Fellowship; the others were not checked there.
The Hobbit was on Netflix in none of the five countries we checked.
The Rings of Power is exclusive to Prime Video and will not move to Netflix, because Amazon produces it.
The Hobbit does not follow The Lord of the Rings
The two trilogies are licensed separately, though most articles treat them as one block.
We checked The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in the US, the Netherlands, Germany, France and Italy. It was on Netflix in none of them. Germany is the sharpest case: The Lord of the Rings is on Netflix there, The Hobbit is not, and it sits only on HBO Max, MGM Plus Amazon Channel and Magenta TV+. In France it had no subscription offer at all.
The structural home is HBO Max
New Line Cinema made the trilogy, New Line belongs to Warner Bros. Discovery, and Warner Bros. Discovery runs HBO Max. In every checked country where HBO Max operates, the trilogy is on it, including those where Netflix has it too. Disney+ also carries all three films in several checked markets, among them Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Turkey, Brazil and Canada, so open that app before you pay for anything new. The Netflix placements are licences alongside that home, not a move.
Two exceptions: Canada, where Bell's Crave carries the HBO output, and South Africa, where Prime Video is the home. Service names here go stale fast: India's is JioHotstar since February 2025, and the Hulu carrying the films in Japan is Nippon TV's own, not Hulu on Disney+.
Buying, renting or one month of a subscription
Do the sum. Prices below were checked on 27 September 2026, one country at a time, and we name the stores each price comes from.
In the US, buying all three costs $27.97 ($9.99, $9.99 and $7.99) at the Apple TV Store, Amazon Video and Fandango At Home. Renting all three costs $16.97 at those same three stores ($4.99, $5.99 and $5.99). Plex rents each film for $2.99, so the cheapest rental route is $8.97. HBO Max Basic With Ads costs $10.99 a month and already carries them. Buying is about two and a half months of that. Renting all three at the Apple TV Store, Amazon Video or Fandango At Home costs more than one month of the subscription. Renting all three at Plex costs less.
In the Netherlands, buying costs three times €7.99 (€23.97) and renting three times €2.99 (€8.97), against €5.99 a month for HBO Max Basic with ads. Buying is roughly four months of subscription.
We found no evidence that any of these prices is a temporary offer, so treat them as the prices on 27 September 2026 and check the store before you buy. JustWatch's "leaving in 10 days" notice referred to that, not to streaming.
Why the ownership fight decides this
Netflix bid for Warner Bros. Discovery's studios and streaming arm and lost. On 5 December 2025 its offer valued the equity at $72bn, or $27.75 per share. On 13 January 2026 Netflix restructured its $82.7bn offer as all cash and kept the price at $27.75. Paramount Skydance then bid $31 per share on 27 February 2026 and won. The incoming owner is Paramount Skydance, which runs Paramount+, so old owner and new both compete with Netflix.
Paramount Skydance announced the takeover on 27 February 2026, and the Antitrust Division of the US Department of Justice cleared it on 12 June 2026. Announcement is not completion. On 21 September 2026 Paramount Skydance settled out of court with the state of California and the Writers Guild of America, and the buyer said the deal would close about two weeks later. It had not closed on 27 September 2026. A federal court order blocking the takeover was still in place and opponents were still filing, so Warner Bros. Discovery still owned New Line and HBO Max on the day we checked.
What we could not establish
Netflix Turkey is the only market where we saw a near-term end date: listing metadata showed all three films running to 10 October 2026. That date comes from catalogue metadata rather than from Netflix or Warner, and distributors move such dates routinely, so check the app before you plan around it. The corporate facts in this piece come from public reference and news summaries rather than from company filings or press releases, so read the dates as reported rather than confirmed. Our full country sweep covers the three Jackson films only, because the catalogue source we used would not serve enough requests to cover more titles. We found no start date for any Netflix licence, and every end date comes from JustWatch and TMDB metadata rather than an announcement, and distributors shift those routinely.

The rights are sold country by country. Netflix Germany holds a licence for all three films, Netflix in the US, the UK and the Netherlands does not. Same app, different catalogue.
Is The Hobbit on Netflix?
Not in the five countries we checked: the US, the Netherlands, Germany, France and Italy. It is licensed separately, so having The Lord of the Rings says nothing about The Hobbit.
Will The Rings of Power come to Netflix?
No. Amazon MGM Studios produces it for Prime Video alone. Season 3 is announced for 11 to 25 November 2026, so it was not out when we checked.
