Is Downton Abbey on Netflix?
Almost every page on this question gives one answer. That is the error. "Downton Abbey" is two rights packages: the ITV series (six seasons, 52 episodes, 2010 to 2015) and three Focus Features films (2019, 2022, 2025). In the two biggest English-speaking markets they sit on opposite services.
In the United States the films are on Netflix and the series is not. In the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Canada and Mexico it is reversed. Both "it is on Netflix" and "it left Netflix" are half true. Which half depends on your country and on which package you mean.
We checked ten of Netflix's more than 190 markets on 27 September 2026, through the JustWatch GraphQL API: US, GB, NL, DE, FR, CA, MX, AU, ES, IT.
Series on Netflix: yes in GB, NL, DE, FR, CA, MX. No in US, AU, ES, IT.
Films on Netflix: all three in the US, The Grand Finale in Australia, nowhere else.
The series left Netflix US around 1 June 2022. It has been off and on elsewhere too: What's on Netflix listed all six seasons leaving 24 Netflix regions
on 14 August 2022, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, France and Canada among them, so the present run in those markets is a later licence.
NBCUniversal owns Carnival Films, which made both, and Focus Features, which released the films in the US,
and it runs Peacock and owns Sky.
Netflix US has The Grand Finale on the ten month window in the Universal deal announced 29 October 2024,
which began early for live action in January 2026. For the 2019 and 2022 films we found no window.
Netflix in the United States
The series is not there. It left around 1 June 2022 according to TV Guide and What's on Netflix. It sits on Peacock Premium at $12.99 a month or Premium Plus at $19.99, checked at peacocktv.com on 27 September 2026 after the rise of 18 August 2026. The $8.99 Select tier does not carry it. It is also on Amazon Prime Video, BritBox at $10.99 a month, and PBS.
All three films are on Netflix US, ad plan included. The Grand Finale reached Peacock on 7 November 2025 and Netflix on 7 March 2026. For the 2019 film we have no arrival date, and Collider reported on 9 November 2024 that it was leaving Netflix on 1 December without naming a region, so it has been off and back once.
Netflix in the other nine markets
Where the series appears on Netflix, all six seasons are there. In the UK the real home is ITVX, free with ads, with Netflix one licensee among several. In the Netherlands the series sits on five services at once, which is the opposite of an exclusive and the kind of position that moves.
The films barely appear. Outside the US only Netflix Australia has one, The Grand Finale, registered 16 April 2026. Elsewhere a film in a subscription is in an NBCUniversal house: SkyShowtime, WOW, Now TV, Canal+. The series is also on Disney+ in the UK, under the hub that was called Star until it was renamed Hulu on Disney+ on 8 October 2025, Japan excepted. We did not check Disney+ in the other nine markets.
Why it splits this way
Carnival Films made the series and the films, with Focus Features releasing the films in the United States and Universal Pictures releasing them elsewhere, and all of it sits inside NBCUniversal, which runs Peacock and owns Sky. In the US it keeps the series on its own service, on a licence running to 1 July 2027 in the JustWatch data. Elsewhere it has no general service, so the series is licensed widely. The series is structural. The films rotate.
Buying versus subscribing
In the US, 52 episodes of about 50 minutes is roughly 43 hours, one month of viewing for most people. The digital set runs from $25.99 at GRUV to $114.94 in HD at Apple TV. Apple in HD is 8.8 times one month of Peacock Premium, and a year of BritBox at $109.99 undercuts it. GRUV is the exception: $25.99 is 2.0 months of Peacock, so a rewatcher buys cheaper there. In the UK the series is £0 on ITVX against £48.94 or more to buy, and in the Netherlands it is in five subscriptions against €64.89. We checked no Netflix price anywhere, so no sum here is measured against one.
What is not settled
Ten markets out of more than 190, with no Asia, Scandinavia, eastern Europe, Africa or Middle East. The country positions come from one source, confirmed independently only for the US (Peacock's help page, NBC, Variety) and the UK (ITV's own ITVX page). No departure date for the films from Netflix US is announced: early January 2027 for The Grand Finale is our arithmetic on the published ten-month window from 7 March 2026. The Netflix licences on the series carry no end date in the data, which is missing information, not a promise. A New Era showing no subscription in France, Mexico and Spain came from a search endpoint that truncates at twelve titles, the same truncation that made our first Dutch check miss The Grand Finale, so those three answers are the weakest here. Dated in the data, not announced anywhere public: the series is listed as leaving Prime Video UK on 6 December 2026, and the Peacock licence is listed as ending 1 July 2027. Licence dates in that feed move without notice. Search the title in your own account. That is the only check that reflects your billing country today.
What a VPN does and does not do here
A VPN changes the network location your connection appears to come from. It does not change your account's billing region, it does not add a title to a plan that never carried it, and using one can conflict with a service's terms.
The obvious pitch is the wrong one. Sending a US reader to the UK library for the series is weak, because that series is legally available in the US on four services. The difference that costs money runs the other way: a non-US subscriber who wants all three films in one place, because outside the US they are split across NBCUniversal subscriptions and rental stores. With Netflix in the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, France, Canada or Mexico, the series is in your plan and the films are not. With Netflix in the United States, the films are in your plan, probably until early 2027, and the series is not, because it sits on Peacock until at least 1 July 2027.
